The Sons of Union Veterans

After the death of Dr. John Cox, the house was sold to the Sons of Union Veterans (SUV).  The house  became known as the Grand Army of the Republic  (G.A.R.) Memorial Home.  After losing our collections to the Fire of 1911 in a building that we shared with Bangor Savings Bank and the Bangor Public Library on State Street,  the BHS once again shared space in the newly built Bangor Public Library.  In 1952, the Sons of Union Veterans and the BHS decided to share the Hill House. At this time, the house would undergo a change, including the upstairs bedrooms being converted into exhibit space. It was during this time that the ell was added to the first floor.

In 1974, the SUV gifted the building to the BHS, and the Hill House became not only our home but also the largest object in our collection.
