Bangor Historical Society Debuts New Fence with Ribbon Cutting

We’re thrilled to share that the granite wall and ornamental fence restoration at Hill House is officially complete. We marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting and celebration alongside our board members, city partners, and community members. It’s a milestone that’s been years in the making, and it couldn’t have happened without your support. Replacing it during our 160th anniversary year felt especially meaningful, it’s a return to the past while preserving our future.

The granite retaining wall, which had begun to lean into the public sidewalk, has been fully restored. The new fence and gate bring security, beauty, and a return to Hill House’s historic appearance. Altogether, the project cost $80,000, with $60,000 provided by the City of Bangor through its Community Development Block Grant Program. The remaining funds were raised through generous contributions from donors like you.

Since the fence was installed, we’ve seen increased foot traffic, more visitors, and renewed curiosity about Hill House and Bangor’s history. Projects like this remind us why preservation matters, not just to protect a building, but to enhance the integrity, safety, and vitality of our community.

With the fence and wall project behind us, we now turn our full attention to the next major challenge: restoring the three-sided portico, which is essential to the house’s structural stability.
